Men’s denim has been evolving steadily in the last decade from a straight leg light wash that looks like something to bale hay in, to a more stylized look ready for a night on the town. The cut and wash options are just as variable as women’s, but there was still one problem no one had thought to correct until now—that of the back pocket.
For too long men have been storing their wallets and phones in the back pocket of their jeans, and only just recently have they started to realize the health problems that can come from it.
Years ago, Bob Weil, a local music industry veteran, began experiencing back pain, and after working with his chiropractor, determined the root cause was sitting on his wallet. The simple solution was to start wearing cargo pants, but the options were limited and not fashion forward.
Always a creator, Weil and his wife Julie set out to design a denim cargo pant for men—and in 2010 Southern Blues Denim Company was born. The original design they developed was an external pocket that met the function they were looking for but not the form. So in 2012 they brought on designer and friend, Sandra Ney, to help sharpen their look. After graduating college, the Weil’s daughter, Bethany, came on board to help launch the brand into what it is today.
Southern Blues Denim Co. now boasts four styles of denim pants and three styles of shorts for men with a sleek internal side pocket that discretely stores an iPhone 6 Plus or a comparably sized phone.
With an eye for style, mother-daughter duo Julie and Bethany offer a line of denim that appeals to the broad spectrum of men in their lives. While Bob is in the music industry, Bethany’s husband, Nathan, serves as the rugged cowboy model in many of their advertisements.
Men can choose from Dark Stretch – a slim straight cut made with a 98% cotton/2% elastane dark denim fabric; Whiskered – a slim straight 100% cotton dark denim fabric with whiskering at the front pockets; Distressed- a slim straight 100% cotton denim fabric with an all-over distressed wash; and Chambray – slim straight made with light blue 100% cotton fabric, and is lightweight for summer days.
The shorts offered are Dark Denim – a skinny cut made with 98% cotton/2% elastane fabric, Twill – regular cut made with a 100% cotton navy fabric, and a Chambray – regular cut, great for the beach.
Along with pants and shorts the Weils also sell branded hats, t-shirts, and locally made Light Shine candles. The rugged, earthy candles appeal to men and women and are non-GMO, soy and dye free.
For years Southern Blues Denim Co. was an online store only with the Weils promoting their denim to friends and the occasional local festival. A chance connection with Ron Shuff led to the early June opening of their first denim retail store located in Spring Hill, TN.
